Desert Jewel - La Quinta, CA

Look up the word 'desert' in the thesaurus and you'll find words like 'arid', 'bare', 'desolate' and 'lonely'. Here are some words I'd use to describe our weekend in the desert:

Kooky
(Malia Mills bathing cap)

Tasty
(grilled vegetable sandwich with garlic aioli)

Cozy
(front patio)
Welcoming

Friends of ours have a weekend winter retreat nestled in La Quinta's 'cove', surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains (think Palm Springs, only more quaint!). It is a veritable jewel. A cozy little casita - one of about sixty original cottages built between 1935 to 1941. They were originally designed for the leisurely who wanted to spend their summers in the mountains and winters in the desert.

Peppered throughout the neighborhood, the casitas are Spanish Colonial Revival with a nod to adobe construction. A stroll through streets whose names conjure vacations in Mexico will reveal high walls with only a glimpse of what lays behind. Privacy. Seclusion. Leisure... Romance. These are words to describe this colony of historic hideaways.

the end of another beautiful day...

you know how I love to end on dessert... crostini will have to do!

For recommendations on places to stay in the desert, have a peek at this post about the resort at La Quinta and Smoke Tree in Palm Springs.

Forgive this extra long post but I just missed you so!! Glad to be back in the blogosphere - I missed my friends... Tell me, how was your summer?

Your BACK!! Welcome BACK!! Beautiful holidaying! The misters were confusing me - I was looking at the photo thinking 'hmmmm, these buildings seem to be smoking!! or on fire or something!?' until I read your caption. Busy summer here, trying to move our family from mainland Europe to that tiny island called the UK.

so A, just trying to taunt us all with this return post?

it all looks heavenly and to think esther williams made an appearance as well.

that porch, the door, the flowers, the martinia, those abs....i want them all!

hhhmmm, busy summer. started with the annual 4th of july lobster bake. Hell yeah. it was hot which meant i enjoyed our little pool quite a lot. and then we had a few waves of family visiting from dublin, culminating with 4 weeks....one with bil and two nieces, followed by bil, sil and a two and nearly 4 year old. who btw, both loved the pool.

so glad you got away to the dessert. i'd never even considered it but it looks divine. thanks for stopping by my little corner.

What a wonderful post. Great place and lots of fun pictures. The bathing cap looks like something from the 1950's. I'd wear one.
