The Quest for Great Balls (On Tires) - Villains Tavern

Incrediball: Ground Kobe Beef, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Gryuere, Wild Arugula, Garlic Aioli, Toasted Brioche

I'm going to spare you the endless puns (blog title excluded) because it's just too easy... Plus, I got them out of my system last night when Clint raised his glass to the dirtiest thing I could say about his balls and exclaim he had actually never heard that one before! I'll leave it up to your imagination...

film set: "Bar"

First let me begin by setting the scene. Our quest began in what I would describe as the unglamorous underbelly of downtown LA. I don't usually go this deep and made a couple panicked phone calls to Erica en route. I had no idea just beyond the usual stomping grounds of Little Tokyo and the Arts District there was a neighborhood called the Warehouse District! Eerily beautiful in its own way, with streets covered in the old streetcar tracks, and the inevitable film crews camped along side. The entire neighborhood felt so much like a movie set Erica and I mistook an actual set for the bar we were in search of!

Anyway, that experience only heightened our joy and relief at discovering such a stunning establishment when we finally arrived at Villains Tavern. The first thing I noticed was how "movie set" the feel was and Clint later confirmed the owner worked as a set designer. It also felt like a bar in Boston, only with hipsters... and balls... but I'm getting to that...

I can't  tell you how delicious and inventive the libations are (and you get to drink out of a Mason jar!)

Great Balls on Tires is a gourmet food truck (if you haven't read about my food truck obsession, or are unfamiliar with this hot dining trend for which LA has become a trailblazer,  you can read about it here) but on Tuesday nights my friend Clint serves his Great Balls out of the Villains' kitchen. These are some incredibly tasty gourmet balls. All the ingredients are top quality, extremely fresh, and the brioche has a conscience. Clint has partnered with Homeboy Bakery, which is under the umbrella of Homeboy Industries, one of the largest gang intervention and re-entry programs in the country. Anyway, back to the balls. Why balls, you ask? Well, to quote Clint,  "You can create any cuisine in the form of a ball". They are also found in most cultures... get a load of these:
Ballywood: Gram Masala Chicken, Coconut Madras Curry, Crisp Fried Onion, Tomato Chutney, Cilantro Chutney, Saffron Basmati Rice
Whisky Sour Ball: Pork, Beef, Bacon, Maker's Mark Bourbon, Sour Cherry Glace
Buffalo Ball: Chicken, Buffalo Wing Sauce, Mac and Cheese, Blue Cheese Dressing and Celery Sticks
Great Burger: Certified Angus Beef, Bacon Onion Jam, Cheddar, Grainy Mustard Aioli, Toasted Brioche (fries optional)
Cooked to perfection - redonculously delicious!
There is also a gorgeous outdoor area where you can listen to live music, order more drinks, play games and encounter cryptic messages left over from Trivia Night...

It was a night of triple discovery for me - a new neighborhood, bar, and food obsession! All in all it was a night well spent... I suggest you put your balls to the walls next week and venture over to Villains! (sorry, just had to get one more in there)

Oh what a beautiful bar!! All those pretty bottles! Oh, and as for the food - yum! I have a feeling I may try and recreate them this weekend in my little corner of France...they would call them 'grandes boules sur des pneus'. Yeah, I think that works!
